About
6 weeks before GDC 2009, Vicious Cycle asked me to build environments
for their latest engine tech demo. My influence was films like I Am
Legend and The Day After Tomorrow to name a few but the direction
really came from my interest in abandoned buildings and my exposure
to them through my photography.
I found reference material through the weekly
blog I do every Monday focuses on abandoned buildings being reclaimed
by nature. My team was small but so was the scope of the environments.
Myself and another environment artist took ownership over different
areas while another artist helped with various props like Plants,
Foliage and Desk Furniture. In addition we had a FX artist focusing
on a long list of requests. One prop took a little more work and needed
help from 3 other artists, one focusing on modeling, another texturing
and one on animation. The beginning of the project started off like
most, I submitted the general theme and reference material to our
in house concept artist and he quickly came up with some establishing
shots. 6+ weeks later everything was done and sent to Vicious Cycles
GDC booth. Tech demo's and real game levels are different and It wasn't
as polished as I would of liked but It delivered on its main goal
and highlighted all the tools and capabilities available in the latest
Vicious Engine.
The original idea I had for the Main Building was an office / financial
building that had been hollowed out by a meteor or invading space
pod. |
